Howdy podner: Feb FA {February 1951 Vol. 4 #6 Fantasy Advertiser} came, and pretty good it is, even without any of my articles or pix (this is a subtle hint). Coblentz had a middlin' interesting article: he should have given examples. I rather liked Clarke's long, rambling essay. - - cover this issue not-so-hot. This is Roy Hunt? Ghaa. Nothing to it, nothing new, fresh, original, just a f*cking comet moving by something-or-other. Let's see Grossman or somebody. Neil Austin. --Aristrom's pic on pg. 8 veddy {sic} good. -- Are you sure that double-spread out on pgs 17-18 isn't a set for Destination You-kno-What? Original Signed Postcard from Lin Carter to Roy Squires, editor of "The Fantasy Advertiser", posted "Jan, 31, 1951"

Before becoming a much published author and editor in the field of Fantasy, Lin Carter was an enthusiastic fan and collector. Roy Squires - publisher and friend to Ray Bradbury and Clark Ashton Smith, was at this time editing and publishing the much admired magazine devoted to collecting Fantasy and Science Fiction literature, entitled "The Fantasy Advertiser" which later became "The Science Fiction Advertiser" . Lin Carter was contributing articles to "TFA" and comments "FA came today and pretty good it is even without any of my articles or pix" (this is a subtle hint)"...Carter comments on various authors and artists - Arthur C. Clarke, Jon Arfstrom (Weird Tales artist) Roy Hunt (another artist) Neil Austin (artist) and in the wake of this enthusiasm notes...'NEWS ITEM: I is jest been drafted. Report for physical Feb 9th. Louses up my plans for my fanzine..." A lighthearted little card with good banter.

Unusual Fanzine: Planit Stories

The seller of this item states: PANIT STORIES June 1945 mimeo Science Fiction fanzine with illustrations of various fans, including Walter Dougherty (who published the mag). This copy was sent to Roy Squires but returned by the USPS as Squires had moved & it was also 1.5 cents postage due! VG+ condition (median mailing fold). {Interesting anecdote: Roy Squires was to be a future associate of Arkham House}

{Also note that this has the infamous "bug-eyed monster" with tentacles no less. One eye, to boot. - CP}

Both Squires & Bond were noted booksellers as well. An interesting letter from one bookseller to another and a nice example of an Arkham House author's signature.

Squires who would later publish Ray Bradbury, Clark Ashton Smith and Robert E. Howard. Tremaine published Lovecraft, Jack Williamson, Stanley Weinbaum, Murray Leinster, E. E. Smith, C. L. Fantasy Press Incorporates - A personal typed letter from Lloyd Eshbach - founder & publisher of Fantasy Press - to Roy A. Squires inviting him to invest in Fantasy Press. This is not the form letter that was sent out later, but a personal invitation . As Eshbach states in his book..."Over My Shoulder""The corporation was formed in 1954. I wrote to a selected list of fan customers. Seventy fans responded with purchases of stock ranging from a single share at $25 to 40 shares at $1000.....Looking back on everything I tried as a publisher I regret this step above all others...my friends lost all they invested" - "Over My Shoulder" pg. 136.I do not have Roy's response but knowing him as well as I did I doubt that he invested anything more than good advice, for Roy knew the whims of fans and the general book-buying populace!This is the type of material that makes collecting the great joy that it is! Squires - bookseller, bibliographer, printer, publisher, raconteur - issued an Arkham House bibliographic booklet in 1985 noting dates, references, and assigning chronological numberings to all catalogs, announcements, letters & postcards from the noted publisher. This particular piece is number 31 in "The Phil Mays Collection of Arkham House Ephemerae", a leaflet folded to 4 pages.
